Czech Museum of Music

Czech Museum of Music, a part of the National Museum, was established in 1976 uniting the enlarged music department of the National Museum, Museum of Bedřich Smetana and Museum of Antonín Dvořák. The Museum of B. Smetana (established in 1928) has had its seat in a neo-renaissance building near the Charles Bridge since 1936. The permanent exhibition documents the life and work of the founder of Czech national music. The Museum also runs the house in Jabkenice near Mladá Boleslav, where Smetana used to stay towards the end of his life. The memorial of Bedřich Smetana was reopened to public in June 2003 after an extensive reconstruction.

Since its foundation in 1932 the Museum of A. Dvořák has been situated in the baroque pleasure house built at the beginning of the 18th century by K. I. Dienzenhofer. It houses the exposition about the composer´s life and work. The Museum also takes care of the composer´s birth place in Nelahozeves and the memorial of Josef Suk in Křečovice near Benešov. The current structure of the Czech Museum of Music is based on the collected and researched material and on the mission of its individual departments. Apart from the above mentioned departments there is also the department of music instruments.
